What does the counter measure?
The live results show words, characters, characters without whitespace, sentences, lines, paragraphs, and estimated reading time. Counts update as you type or paste text.

What counts as a word?
The current counter recognizes sequences containing letters or numbers and supports apostrophes and hyphens inside words, including international letters. Specialized editorial rules may count some compounds differently, so use the requirement of your publisher or form when it specifies a particular method.
Characters with and without spaces
Hello world contains 11 characters in total and 10 when the space is excluded. Line breaks count as characters in the total because they are part of the pasted text.
How reading time is estimated
Estimated reading time uses an average of 200 words per minute. It is a planning estimate, not a prediction for every reader; technical material, unfamiliar language, and presentation scripts may be read more slowly.
